“With over 40 years in the equestrian industry, Sandra has helped thousands of horses and owners through Intelligent Horsemanship, Horse Agility and compassionate, evidence-based training”
Sandra Williams
From the moment she first sat on a pony at just three years old, Sandra Williams knew horses would shape her life. More than fifty years later, that lifelong passion has become a career dedicated to helping horses and people understand one another through kindness, trust and thoughtful communication.
Sandra’s experience spans every corner of the equestrian world. Over the past four decades she has worked with an extensive variety of ponies and horses—from much-loved family companions and children’s ponies to competition horses, youngsters and those needing specialist behavioural support. Every horse has added to her understanding that there is no single solution; each horse deserves to be seen and understood as an individual.
As a young rider, Sandra competed in show jumping and cross-country before beginning work in the industry at just fourteen, cleaning tack and learning from experienced horsemen and women. By sixteen she had left school to train at a British Horse Society Riding Establishment, later working as a freelance groom and rider while supporting herself through work in pubs and restaurants.
Alongside her equestrian career, Sandra qualified as a City & Guilds Chef. Although seemingly very different professions, both demand control of emotions, observation, consistency, preparation and attention to detail—qualities that continue to influence her calm and methodical approach to training horses and coaching their owners.
A defining moment came after discovering Monty Roberts’ philosophy of non-violent horsemanship. Inspired by his belief that horses learn best through trust rather than force, Sandra completed her training with Intelligent Horsemanship under Kelly Marks and Ian Vandenberghe, earning both the Intelligent Horsemanship Diploma and her Monty Roberts Certification of Horsemanship.
Today, Sandra is proud to be an Intelligent Horsemanship Recommended Trainer, an Accredited Horse Agility Trainer and Judge, holder of the UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Generic Riding and Sports, and a Lead Coach on Intelligent Horsemanship courses. Over the years she has supported Monty Roberts during many of his UK tours and has worked alongside Kelly Marks, helping to educate and inspire thousands of horse owners through practical, ethical and compassionate training.
Sandra’s dedication to horse welfare and education has been recognised by the British Horse Society, where she was honoured with an Unsung Hero Award, having been nominated by her own clients for the difference she has made to horses and their handlers.
An established writer and author, Sandra is passionate about making quality horsemanship accessible to everyone. Her first book, Loading the less easy Horse published in 2022 with a foreword by Kelly Marks, provides practical, compassionate solutions for horses that struggle with loading and travelling while strengthening the bond between horse and handler.
Her second book, The Mindful Equestrian – Recipes for Balance, Connection and Well-Being, takes that philosophy even further. Combining practical groundwork exercises, mindfulness, step-by-step photography and QR-linked demonstration videos, it offers readers an interactive way to develop confidence, balance and connection with their horses.
Sandra now works with private clients and small groups, helping owners build harmonious partnerships through her Intelligent Agility sessions, where the principles of Intelligent Horsemanship meet the fun and creativity of Horse Agility. She has coached for over 25 years on a range of Intelligent Horsemanship courses, including the Five Day Foundation Course, Leading and Loading the Less Easy Horse, Handling the Untouched Horse, Perfect Manners and the Online Horse Psychology Course, mentoring the next generation of Intelligent Horsemanship students.
A popular speaker and presenter, Sandra enjoys sharing her knowledge with riding clubs, equestrian organisations and community groups, encouraging greater understanding of equine behaviour, welfare and communication.
Whether working with a nervous owner, a talented competition horse, a rescued pony or a much-loved family companion, Sandra’s philosophy remains unchanged. She believes the strongest partnerships are built through understanding, control of emotions and clear communication. She listens—not only to the owner, but to the horse—combining practical experience, evidence-based horsemanship and genuine empathy to help every partnership reach its full potential.
Away from work, Sandra finds inspiration in nature, photography and the countryside, embracing the same sense of mindfulness and connection that lies at the heart of everything she teaches.
